When did MINI stop being a mini?

When an SUV joined the 57 y.o. brand line-up in the form of MINI Countryman.

Well that was back in 2010 and fast forward to 2017, we will see the all-new second generation of MINI Countryman introduced, slated for release in the first quarter of this year.

When we first viewed the new model, at a quick glance it's hard to pick the differences between old and new but at a closer look; the car has grown slightly, 200mm longer and 30mm wider than the previous model. This makes it larger than a Mazda CX-3 and significantly bigger than a Nissan Juke. This second-generation Countryman is built on the new BMW X1 platform, which the two makers share, and it's a good thing!

The new Countryman looks more mature compared to the previous, original model. MINI has created a more rugged SUV look with squared off hatches, a long bonnet and chunky surfaces. Rails on the roof are standard (however to-be-confirmed for Australia). Where it was once an option, MINI have stated they add to the rugged style.

Inside the new SUV, the improvements are visibly considerable. Quality has taken a significant step forward from the previous model, with plusher materials, neatly styled switchgear and a general air of solidity only bettered by the all-new Audi Q2 at this price point.

At this stage, pricing is to be confirmed however we believe it should be similar to the current models which is around the early $40,000 mark.
