Google's Self-Driving Car Engineers Quit!

Now this is a first, the engineers behind building Google’s self-driving car Waymo made so much money they decided to quit!

Google had paid its staffers on Waymo such huge salaries and bonuses that they had enough money to give up their stable jobs at the tech company.

The "unusual salary setup" was based on the success of Waymo, not Google itself. Employee’s bonuses and equity were multiplied by as much as 16x in one case, putting employee’s remuneration in the multi-millions.

The system rewarded engineers for Waymo's success to date, despite an actual production car yet to be completed.

The "f—- you money," as employees called it, was too much even for Google. The cashed up employees left to start Otto, the self-driving trucking company acquired by Uber and Argo AI, which Ford has hugely invested in.

Lesson learnt, new employees to Waymo won't have such salary; they're being paid on a more normal remuneration system, where their bonuses won't get multiplied by 16x!
