The small hatch has been a popular city car for many years and has sold more than 5.3 million cars worldwide since its rebirth in 2004. This new model is the third-generation badge.

Built on an all-new, more rigid, lighter platform, the hatch sits slightly smaller when compared to today’s Swift, although the wheelbase is providing an improved rear legroom and an increased luggage area.

Worth noting is the tiny turning circle of 9.6 metres, perfect for tight inner city parking.

There will be all new engines, ranging from 1.0-litre turbo-petrol ‘BoosterJet’ engine producing 75kw, 1.4-litre turbo producing about 103kW, and in Japan a petrol-electric mild hybrid.

Other updates include a new six-speed automatic transmission option with paddles (sold alongside a revised five-speed manual), LED headlights, and extra safety features on most spec grades such as low-speed autonomous brakes, fed data by a camera and laser sensors, and lane-departure warning.

It’s expected that the new-generation Suzuki Swift will launch in Australia in May 2017, with a price tag starting from approx. $15k plus on-roads.
