All New VOLVO XC40 Joins the Small SUV Club

Volvo has received a makeover that is best compared to an episode of Queer Eye for The Straight Guy in the automotive world. In its past life the Volvo we knew carried with it a daggy reputation. It chose comfort over style, brains over brawn and played it safe over sexy. For too long it tried to ride on the coattails of its cute, foreign charm but, after years of rejection and finally realising nice guys don’t have to finish last… Volvo went away for the summer and got hot.

Fast forward to 2018, the XC40 is the most underrated, charmingly handsome mid-size SUV on the market. Known for its Scandinavian engineering, the Swedish carmaker has returned to roads with its sturdy design and ever-reliable safety features, whilst modelling a sporty, new build and luxurious tech interior!

Physically smaller in size than its older siblings, the XC90 and XC60, this compact model is of surprisingly well-balanced proportions. The nose of the car is wide-set and robust looking, whilst the rear of the car holds its shape behind four sleek, expansive windows.

Outside, the car features optional sun roof, Volvo’s classic grille, t-shaped headlights, and our personal favourite: LED tail lights - a signature detail found on high-end, luxury vehicles.

Equipped with a high performing engine, it still gets a tick of approval for fuel economy and offers eco-mode as a standard feature.

Inside, the car features comfort leather seating, extra leg room and secret storage compartments. On the tech side of things, no detail has been spared and at no extra cost. Each XC40 comes with a 9” touchscreen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, 250-watt sound system and optional full-view cameras.

Feeling dazzled by the lights? Don’t worry; it’s perfectly safe to get carried away with this one. Not just a pretty face, the XC40 remains as sensible as ever, kitted out in safety features. On the check list you’ll find a full set of airbags, emergency braking system, daytime running lights, lane-keeping assistance and pedestrian detection.

Clearly a car that cares, the XC40 shows us that it’s important to stay true to your roots… but that a little bit of ‘tszuj’ goes a long way.

The Volvo XC40 is available from $55,000 driveway.
